To be eligible to practise as a registered nurse in Nova Scotia, individuals must meet the licensing requirements set by the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia, and renew their licence on an annual basis. Anyone graduating from a nursing program in Nova Scotia is eligible to apply to the College for a licence to practise once they have passed the national nursing examination. The College also licences qualified individuals who studied nursing in another province or country.

During the 2009 licensing year (November 1, 2008 — October 31, 2009), the College issued 9817 active-practising licences. This represents a 1.7% increase over the number of active-practising licences issued in the 2008 licensing year.
