Each Canadian province and territory is responsible for ensuring that individuals applying for registration and licensure in their province/territory (i.e., graduates of their nursing programs or nurses educated in other countries) meet an acceptable level of competence before they begin to practise. The purpose of the Canadian Registered Nurse Examination (CRNE) is to protect the public, by ensuring that entry-level registered nurses possess the competencies required to practise safely and effectively. This level of competence is measured, in part, by success in writing the CRNE.
In Nova Scotia, the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia (the College) administers the CRNE for eligible candidates. Eligibility to write the CRNE is determined by the College抯 Registration office upon an individual抯 completion of an application process for examination and registration in Nova Scotia. There is a fee to write the exam (please contact the College抯 Registration office for current exam fees).
The CRNE is a comprehensive exam that tests for competencies applicable to nursing of children, adults and the elderly; mental health and psychiatric nursing; maternal-child (obstetrical) nursing; disease prevention and health promotion; and community nursing. The exam is composed of multiple-choice questions. It is written over a four hour period, and the examination results are reported as 揚ass or 揊ail.
The CRNE is offered three times a year: February, June and October (written on the same dates across Canada; except in Quebec, where a different exam is written). As per the CRNNS By-Laws candidates shall have a maximum of three (3) opportunities to pass the Canadian Registered Nurse Examination in the twenty-four (24) month period immediately following their eligibility to write, and candidates shall not be permitted to further write the registration examination without
(a) providing evidence of extenuating circumstances; (b) retaking a nursing education program; or (c) successfully completing a competence assessment, at the candidate's expense.
Note: RN exam results are received by the College 8-10 weeks following the examination date. For more information on the CRNE, including specific examination writing dates, please contact:
